This webinar will describe what the new Initial Professional Preparation Standards for Gifted Educators are and how they are used. The presenters will describe how these standards have benefits particular to the fields of gifted and special education and are essential to educating future teachers in the relevant theory, research, pedagogy, and management techniques important for developing and sustaining classroom-based opportunities specifically designed for learners with gifts and talents. The presenters will also suggest possible areas for implementation of the standards at the school, district, and state levels.

Dr. Susan Johnsen

Professor Emerita of Educational Psychology at Baylor University

Susan K. Johnsen, PhD has taught general education students and students with exceptionalities in grades K-8. She is editor-in-chief of Gifted Child Today and coauthor of Identifying Gifted Students: A Practical Guide, Handbook on assessments for gifted learners: Identification, learning progress and evaluation, Implementing Research-Based Gifted Education Practices: An Administrator’s Viewpoint, Classroom Management for Gifted and Twice-Exceptional Students Using Functional Behavior Assessment, Using the National Gifted Education Standards for Pre-K-Grade 12 Professional Development, Independent Study Program and more than 300 articles, monographs, technical reports, chapters, and other books related to gifted and special education. She has written three tests used in identifying gifted students: Test of Mathematical Abilities for Gifted Students (TOMAGS-2), Test of Nonverbal Intelligence (TONI-4) and Screening Assessment Gifted Students (SAGES-3). She is past president of The Association for the Gifted (TAG), Council for Exceptional Children, and past president of the Texas Association for Gifted and Talented (TAGT). She has received awards for her work in the field of education, including CEC’s Leadership Award, TAG’s Leadership Award, NAGC’s Ann Isaac’s Award, NAGC’s President’s Award, TAGT’s President’s Award, TAGT’s Advocacy Award and Baylor University’s Investigator Award, Teaching Award, and Contributions to the Academic Community. Recently, she was named as a Legacy in the field of gifted education by the National Association for Gifted Children.

Dr. Julia Link Roberts

Mahurin Professor of Gifted Studies

Julia Link Roberts is the Mahurin Professor of Gifted Studies and the Executive Director of The Center for Gifted Studies at Western Kentucky University and The Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky. Dr. Roberts is active in state, national, and international organizations. She is past president of the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children. She serves as a member of the board of The Association for the Gifted (a division of the Council for Exceptional Children), a board member of the Kentucky Association for Gifted Education, and chair of the Kentucky Advisory Board on Gifted Education. Her writing focuses on differentiation, curriculum, assessment, advocacy, and STEM schools. She was recognized with the first National Association for Gifted Children David W. Belin Award (2001), the Acorn Award as the outstanding professor at a Kentucky four-year college or university (2011), the Palmarium Award at the University of Denver Institute for the Development of Gifted Education (2015), and the NAGC Ann F. Isaacs Award (2019). Dr. Roberts directs year-round programming for children and young people and travels internationally with high school students. She provides professional development and presents at state, national, and international conferences.
