This webinar offers some clarity for special education professionals to consider the crucial distinctions and intersections between Assistive Technology (AT) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Both AT and UDL are essential tools for fostering inclusive learning environments, providing access, and supporting student achievement—often leveraging technology to do so (Cast.org; Rose, 2000; Mason & Yadon, 2025). Yet, understanding their fundamental differences in scope and instructional timing is key to considering when and how to implement each one. In this webinar, we will use case studies to illustrate how these two approaches work independently and in tandem, and to provide a seamless end-to-end learning support system. We will conclude with practical strategies for implementing instruction and training that support these distinctions and develop effective solutions for learning and access.

TaraMason, Ph.D., is the Universal Design for Learning Consultant at the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of California, Berkeley. She offersfaculty development focused on inclusive, accessible, and asset-based pedagogy,with a special focus on centering disability in teaching. Before joining UCBerkeley, she directed a special education teacher preparation program inColorado and worked as a K-12 education professional for over two decades. Sheholds teaching credentials as an assistive technology specialist, teacher ofstudents with visual impairments, and early childhood, and K-12 specialeducation teacher. Dr. Mason authored Mentoring Partnerships, aguidebook to support special education teachers and their mentors, along withnumerous journal articles and book chapters related to faculty development,UDL, and teacher preparation.
