The presentation presents an in-depth discussion of culture and why it matters in all aspects of education, with attention to special education. A major message is that ‘cultureblindness’ is harmful and contributes to negative educational outcomes for minoritized students (including over-representation in special education high-incidence categories). Strategies and resources for being cultural competent educators are shared (i.e., dispositions, knowledge, and skills).

Donna Ford
Donna Y. Ford, PhD, is a Distinguished Professor of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University. She is the leading scholar on gifted and talented Black students, creator of the Bloom-Banks Matrix, and Equity formula used in a court case. She has received dozens of awards for her scholarship, which consists of almost 400 publicstions (articles and chapters) and numerous books.
