Historically, identity development for d/Deaf and hard of hearing children has been viewed as dichotomous: individuals identified either with Deaf culture or with hearing culture. With changes in hearing technology, mainstream educational placement, and the availability of bi-/multimodal communication options, however, many DHH students are endorsing more flexible, intersectional identities. This presentation will review the research in identity development for DHH children. Leveraging personal stories from DHH young adults, practical strategies to support students in developing positive identities as DHH individuals will also be discussed.
