Enroll in CEC’s On-Demand Collection focused on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to improve student outcomes. Creating learning experiences that are accessible to all learners, regardless of their abilities is no small feat and CEC wants to help elevate your work in this area! You can earn four (4) Continuing Education hours.
Featuring eight curated on-demand courses (most less than 30 minutes), this collection is designed for educators who understand that all learners have different strengths and weaknesses and that by providing multiple means of representation, engagement, and expression, we can create learning experiences that are more likely to be successful for everyone.
When you sign up, you will enjoy these benefits, as part of the CEC Learning Library experience:
- Start learning immediately after registering
- Take the on-demand courses when and where you want
- One year to complete the collection of courses
- Earn 4 hours of continuing education and a certificate for completing the collection
Session 1 | Collaborate to Integrate Universal Design for Learning

Open to view video. | 7 minutes
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework that can help educators reduce barriers to learning so we can design inclusive experiences that support all students to progress toward meaningful, challenging goals. In this session, we will uncover the core foundation of UDL and share concrete strategies for how educators can collaborate to integrate UDL into practice to support all students to develop as expert learners. This session will offer connections between the brain science of learning and practical strategies for educators to collaborate to engage all learners in opportunities for meaningful learning.
Session 2 | Culturally Responsive Teaching in the Universally Designed for Learning Early Childhood Classroom

Even our youngest learners are impacted by implicit bias and racism and young students with disabilities need equitable teaching practices that are also focused on accessibility. This session examines the relationship between equity and accessibility and how a universally designed for learning environment promotes culturally responsive teaching. Participants will explore best practices for teaching young students with disabilities by examining ways to integrate the principles of universal design for learning to foster collaboration, honor cultural and linguistic diversity, and support young children with disabilities in becoming independent learners.
Participants will be able to:
Describe three components of culturally responsive pedagogy in the context of Universal Design for Learning
Identify at least 4 instructional strategies that support culturally responsive instruction in a universally designed for learning early childhood classroom
Identify at least 5 culturally relevant resources or tools for use in a universally designed for learning early childhood classroom
Session 3 | Supporting Authentic Youth Engagement Universal Design for Informal Transition Assessment
Session 3 Recording

Open to view video. | 50 minutes
This session provides an overview of how universal design (UD) principles can be applied to informal transition assessments. Drawing from a toolkit of UD strategies that have been applied in previous research, participants will have opportunities to apply UD strategies to informal transition assessments relevant to their own work.
Participants will be able to:
Understand universal design within the context of informal transition assessment.
Explore an evidence-based toolkit of universal design strategies for transition assessment.
Apply these tools to modify informal transition assessments applicable to their own professional contexts.

This presentation will provide educators of students with Autism or Intellectual Disability with a clear understanding of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework and how to use UDL to enhance behavior management. The UDL framework is designed to provide students with access to content knowledge by providing multiple means of engagement, representation, action, and expression. Using this framework, the presenters will provide practical strategies with examples of how to embed UDL within educational settings to address challenging behaviors throughout this engaging session.
Participants will be able to:
Know and understand what the UDL framework is.
Understand the importance of UDL as it relates to the inclusive education of students with ASD and IND.
Understand how UDL implementation will enhance classroom and individual student behavior management.
Receive a list of online resources to help them implement UDL.
Session 5 | Integrating Arts to Enhance Universal Design for Learning
Session 5 Recording

Open to view video. | 30 minutes
Integration of arts into instruction and assessment provides novel ways for teachers to plan for universal design for learning (UDL). Integration of arts and UDL are known to increase student motivation and engagement, thus increasing achievement. Participants will leave this session with specific ideas they can implement in their classrooms.
Participants will be able to:
Leave with a framework they can use to integrate arts into universally designed instruction.
Generate and share solid ideas for activities, tools, and assessments that integrate arts and UDL.
Session 6 | Math for All: Universal Design for Learning in a Standards-Based Classroom
Session 6 Recording
Open to view video. | 43 minutes
Open to view video. | 43 minutes
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is based on the theory that any tool, asset, or scaffold that has been shown to benefit some learners should be a standard tool available to all learners. In applying supports known to assist learners with disabilities, educators can bring benefits to the variety of students found in any classroom. This session will bridge the UDL theory with practical implementation strategies for a standards-based mathematics curriculum. Participants will learn about the concepts that underpin UDL, the pedagogical value of utilizing a UDL approach, and the three guiding UDL principles. The session will walk participants through standards-based examples of UDL in Math.
Participants will be able to:
Know the concepts that underpin UDL, the pedagogical value for utilizing a UDL approach, and the three guiding UDL principles.
Universally design a standards-based math lesson with practical, easily implemented strategies.
Understand the difference between Universal Design for Learning and Differentiated Instruction (DI) and how to combine them for effective instruction.

Task boxes are a versatile system that can be used in inclusive or special settings for any grade level. Task boxes are literally boxes that contain the materials that a student needs to accomplish a task. The purpose of a task box is to allow students an opportunity to complete hands-on tasks with independence. These are often used as a supplement to regular instruction to reinforce prior learning and allow the application of skills. However, task boxes are only useful if they are appropriately matched to the skill level of a student and are designed to stimulate engagement with the materials.
Session 8 | Unpacking Universal Design for Learning in South Carolina's Largest School District

In this session, we'll share the Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How of our implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) across the largest school district in South Carolina. Participants will experience the presentation in both a new(ish)-to-UDL classroom, school, or district-level viewpoint, and a teacher, administrator, or PD facilitator’s viewpoint. We'll discuss possibilities and pitfalls, wounds, and wins that we have encountered along the way. The presentation style is conversational and varied to engage, inspire, and impact positive change through heightened awareness and understanding of UDL. We will customize the session based on audience choice and participation.
Participants will be able to:
Clearly and concisely explain Universal Design for Learning to include key concepts and terminology.
Leverage a set of design principles that can be used for implementing UDL in a classroom, school, or entire district.
Utilize shared new resources, ideas, and strategies for implementation in their own classrooms, schools, and districts.
