Special education leaders make consequential decisions every day about staffing, resources, programming, professional development, organizational priorities, and growth. Each decision may be reasonable on its own—but over time, competing pressures can create distance between what an organization says it values and what its systems, budgets, and leadership choices actually prioritize. This webinar explores how leaders can use mission as an active decision-making tool rather than simply an aspirational statement. Participants will be introduced to SELP’s Mission Protection Framework™, a practical approach for examining major organizational decisions through a student-centered lens and asking whether choices protect mission, strengthen program quality, support the professionals who serve students, and advance meaningful student outcomes.
Through realistic special education leadership scenarios and guided reflection, participants will examine how mission alignment can inform staffing decisions, resource allocation, program changes, leadership priorities, professional learning, and organizational growth. The goal is not to eliminate difficult tradeoffs, but to give leaders a disciplined process for making them with greater clarity, consistency, and accountability.
At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Identify at least four organizational decision areas in which mission alignment can directly influence programs, services, and outcomes for students with disabilities.
- Apply a student-centered decision-making framework to evaluate a realistic staffing, resource, program, or growth decision.
- Recognize indicators of mission drift and distinguish between decisions that are operationally convenient and those that are strategically aligned with student needs and organizational purpose.
- Develop one actionable practice for strengthening mission alignment and student-centered decision-making within the participant’s own school, district, program, or organization.
