This interactive webinar addresses the pressing need for improved literacy support within special education. Beyond simply creating an Individualized Education Program (IEP) with goals for improvement, students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) and language processing disorders often require more comprehensive literacy strategies. This webinar will provide insights into current gaps in literacy intervention, examine systemic challenges, and present a vision for enhancing literacy outcomes. Attendees will learn actionable strategies for effective use of literacy data, and cross-subject literacy integration, crucial for enabling student success in special and general education environments.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify common gaps in current literacy support practices for students in special education, particularly for those with SLD and language processing disorders.
  2. Understand the implications of the “wait to fail” model and the importance of early intervention frameworks.
  3. Assess the challenges faced by small and large districts in providing effective secondary literacy instruction, especially in staffing and training.
  4. Advocate for literacy skill-building across all subject areas to support academic success and smooth transitions back to general education settings.
